FIFA F-MARC "The 11+" Website

The FIFA and the FIFA Medical Assessment and Research Centre (F-MARC) have recently developed a website dedicated to "The 11+". The 11+ is a warm-up program developed for soccer players designed to reduce the risk of lower extremity injuries (for a discussion of The 11+, click here). The website contains downloads such as posters and instruction cards as well as an collection of videos showing how to perform each exercise. The is an excellent resource for those wanting ot incorperate The 11+ as part of a regular warm-up routine.

I think FIFA should be careful about the use of the word 'Warm-Up' program for some of the exercises suggested in the 11+. Many coaches will copy exactly what is listed in the 11+ program, which includes plyometrics; not something you want your players doing before a game. I was recently on the US Youth National License and several coaches thought FIFA was recommending all of these exercises be done before a game. No doubt, the training environment is a different situation depending on what you are trying to achieve, and many of these exercises, including the box jumps and Nordic hamstring exercise, might be appropriate before, during, and after a training session.

  2. The US Youth license coaches were mistaken regarding the applicaiton of The 11+ on match day. The original paper by Soligard states that all three parts were to be done prior to training, but only the running parts (parts 1 and 3) were to be done on match day. Go to the website, choose 'downloads', then chose 'prevention study results' to access the original paper. On the top of the 3rd page, the authors state "We asked the coaches to use the complete exercise programme as the warm up for every training session throughout the season and to use the running exercises in the programme as part of their warm up for every match." Following that instruction should alleviate your concern about overly demanding exercises in the prematch warmup.
